Whether I’m dwelling in cooler climates or living here in Phoenix, my approach to winter coat-ing has always been the same – I just need a few classic staples that are versatile in style and color, durable, flattering and that keep me cozy and warm when I head to colder climates for winter adventures. They’re also one of the few pieces in my closet that I’m willing to invest a little bit more in if necessary because I’ve found that even though quality can cost a little bit more, it’s 100% worth it when it comes to coats. You’ll get more warmth, durability and better tailoring, which means that you’ll get years, not months of wear out of your investment.
Because I have great navy, grey and fun blush coats already in my arsenal, I set my sights on finding the perfect camel coat this year in a classic belted wrap style that I could dress up or dress down and was heavy enough to withstand the coldest winter temps, and believe me when I say that this was no easy feat. As always, I had a pretty hefty list of requirements going into this search. As I said it had have a heavier weight and not just be a lightweight topcoat, it had to be a below-the-knee style (for extra warmth and wardrobe versatility), it couldn’t totally break the bank, it had to be simple and sans frills, and like I said it had to be a straight, belted wrap style. Harder to find than one might think, but not impossible.
Enter: the camel coat of my dreams! This fun stunner from one of my favorite brit brands, Whistles is such a fun twist on a classic style, and I have absolutely loved wearing it. It’s a heavier weight and kept me completely warm and toasty while walking around NYC all weekend in the frigid temps, is a fun brushed wool so it has a little bit of a teddy coat vibe to modernize the classic style, and is simple and easy to throw on with basically any outfit, dressed up or down. What’s more, they also make this coat in the most gorgeous blush/rose pink color that I actually got to see in person in the store in New York while I was there, and it’s just as incredible as it looks online. Had to exercise some serious self control in that moment!
I love that the fit is a little bit contemporary and menswear-inspired, too with dropped shoulders and a big, chunky belt. And if you love this coat as much as I do and are curious about sizing, though it’s a chunkier/heavier coat in general and looks like it might be “oversized” the fit really isn’t oversized at all. I’m wearing an XS and it fits just right, but still has room for big sweaters. For reference I’m pretty reliably a 0/XS, and I’d say the XS in this coat fits like a US 0. The S would give you a little bit more room across the back, probably slightly longer sleeves and give you a little bit more overlap with the wrap.
Whenever I invest in a piece I love like this, I always think it’s fun to dive into a little high-low pairing to keep myself (and my bank account) sane, and I was shocked when I found this gorgeous sage green scarf at Target for $16 that serves as the perfect complement to the coat color and style! It’s so ridiculously soft, the perfect length for wrapping, warm as can be, and the color is even more stunning in person. Good old Target for the win! It also comes in a “smoke pink” color that appears to be sold out online (though I bet you’d be able to find it in store) and this fun pink plaid color combo.
So if you’ve been on the hunt for the perfect, versatile, warm winter coat or a classic camel wrap coat, you’ll love this winter style staple. Promise! and if you’re curious about fit or anything else you see, definitely drop me a comment and I can help guide you. I love getting the full rundown before I invest in a piece like this, so don’t be shy – I’m happy to help!
