Let’s talk flooring, friends. This is actually one of my favorite home improvement subjects, so buckle up because my enthusiasm for this knows no bounds! For the last six months or so we’ve been in the midst of planning and slowly renovating our detached “office” in our backyard (we also like to call it Hamlet’s little cottage because… he’s king around here), and though it’s been a little bit slow going thanks to about a million other projects and priorities on our plate, we’re making progress! If you haven’t seen this space on Instagram Stories when I’ve given tours, check out the “Before” snaps below to see what it looked like before we started making moves. This charming little space is actually one of our very favorite things about this house and though it’s been almost shockingly well preserved since it was built in the 60s, one of the things that’s so desperately in need of updating is the flooring. Luckily I have a tried, trusted and loved secret weapon on the flooring front, Floor & Decor, and they just opened a brand new, absolutely beautiful store in Tolleson here in the Phoenix area that I got to visit to kick this project off in style! If you know me at all, you know that I was pretty much in paradise perusing their pristine aisles full of pretty tile, wood and stone of all kinds and it filled me with so much inspiration and excitement to dive into this project.
Come get inspired!

If you’re a homeowner and you have yet to become familiar with the wonder that is Floor & Decor, you’ve been seriously missing out, friend. Not to worry though! I’ve had a long-standing love affair with Floor & Decor, so I’m here to fill you in on all you need to know and why I think they’ve made the whole home improvement thing so much more approachable and enjoyable for the average human/homeowner like you and me. My love affair with Floor & Decor started about 3 years ago when we were replacing all of the flooring throughout our home and I was on the seemingly never-ending hunt for the perfect flooring product that met all of our requirements. Of which we had many. When you live in a small, old house with an equally old dog, you need flooring that can stand up to the myriad of “life moments” that can happen so you don’t end up crying on the floor in the fetal position 6 months after installation wondering where it all went wrong. During that process we visited what felt like 1,000 flooring stores and collected even more samples. And it seemed like everywhere we went the selection was small, the price range even smaller and the guidance about the products that would fit our needs and the overall installation process even smaller than that. Collectively those just about sum up all my pet peeves as both a homeowner, enthusiastic DIYer and all around home improvement junkie. The process was frustrating to say the least. That is until a friend suggested Floor & Decor, which until then I’d never heard of. As soon as I stepped through their doors I felt like I’d found flooring bliss! Long story short, we found the perfect flooring for our needs thanks to their extensive selection, helpful staff and unbeatably low pricing, and are still 100% loving our home’s flooring today.

So when it came time to start the flooring hunt all over again for our beloved little office, I knew exactly where to go. It wasn’t even a question! Which is why it was so serendipitous that Floor & Decor reached out and gave me the privilege to tour their gorgeous new Tolleson store and show you guys around. One of the things I absolutely love about Floor & Decor is that they have the most extensive selection of flooring of all kinds – from tile to wood to stone – in stock right there at the store so not only do you have endless options to fit your project needs, but you can get what you need when you need it. What’s more, the selections are perfectly organized so you can easily find your way to what you’re looking for and their displays are huge so you’re not just seeing a tiny sliver of a sample that gives you no sense whatsoever of what it will actually look like in your space. You can fully visualize what your flooring would look like en masse, and trust me when I say that when deciding what surface to put in your house for the long haul, is so incredibly helpful. Flooring sets the tone for all other design and decor decisions in a home, in my opinion, so knowing exactly what you’re getting and loving it is very, very important. Beyond that the staff is not only extremely knowledgable on every product they carry, from the flooring itself to the related tools and accessories, but the stores also have free in-house design services that can help you bring your vision to life, or give you genius new ideas right there in the store. One more thing that I think completely separates them from the pack is that they cater to every kind of customer, from the pros/contractors to the regular homeowner like you and me who wants the ease of professional installation after they buy to the eager DIYer who wants to do it all, and no matter where you fall on that spectrum, they’re there to help you. So if you’re wanting to give flooring installation the old DIY try for the first time, they’ll be there cheering you on and empowering you all of the advice, guidance and tools you need to make it happen. Floor and Decor Tolleson also offers DIY classes every Saturday so you can dive in and become a installation pro!

And I just really love that spirit and that mission. A huge variety of quality product you’ll love that serve so many different needs, prices that don’t break the bank, tons of in-stock inventory so you don’t have to delay your project and they won’t brush you off or leave you out in the cold whether you need professional installation or if you’re a DIYer. It just makes me so happy when I feel like a company really listens to its customers and caters to real people with a range of needs. Even cooler than that, each store location also has its own unique local focus which means that they create a store experience and mix of products that meet the needs of each neighborhood and area they serve, so you’ll feel like they’re speaking right to you and the style of your home.

After feeling like a kid on Christmas and getting the grand tour of the stunning Floor and Decor Tolleson store, showing their designer our project and getting some really great insight and seeing so many new, gorgeous flooring styles I absolutely loved, I was even more excited to get the office flooring project underway! I found a few amazing flooring options that I think could be absolutely perfect for the space and I was so captivated by the designer’s genius ideas that we even started dreaming about bathrooms, bedrooms and beyond. So. Many. Possibilities. Does anyone else become completely mesmerized the second they see pretty tile and flooring? It’s like I drift off to dreamland and can’t be reeled back in!

We would save the original office flooring if we could because it does have so much character, but sadly it’s just been too badly water damaged in certain areas over the decades to salvage, and we need something a little bit more durable (and frankly safer) out there for our daily use. The frontrunners right now? I loved the AquaGuard Parkside Birch Multi-Length Water-Resistant Laminate because the lighter tone was so gorgeous and airy, the planks had beautiful wood-like texture, AquaGuard is ultra durable and the planks come in multiple lengths so the floor would have a bit of a reclaimed feel. I also love the AquaGuard Estate Oak Tawny Hand Scraped Water-Resistant Laminate because of its extra wide planks mixed with planks of other random widths which again gives it that rustic, reclaimed feel and the soft brown tone and texture both make it look just like real hardwood. Another gorgeous and super durable option that’s in the running is the DuraLux Performance Satchel Farms Oak Rigid Core Luxury Vinyl Plank, which is so astonishingly wood-like thanks again to expert texture for a really pleasing farmhouse feel. We’ll probably stick with a laminate or luxury vinyl plank for durability purposes in this space and they carry so many very believable wood-like products on that front, but I was practically drooling over all of their engineered hardwood and hardwood flooring options I saw, too. I spotted about five different styles that will forever stay in my “future dream home” file!

What a fun day, right? I had such a blast exploring the beautiful new Floor & Decor Tolleson store and am beyond inspired by what I saw and learned. I also walked away with a few really exciting options for our office project and can’t wait for you guys to see what we choose. Gorgeous new flooring is going to be such a game-changer in that space! If you have a project on your list that needs wood/tile/stone (they have so much more than just flooring), I’m convinced that Floor and Decor Tolleson is worth the drive from anywhere and bonus, you can contact a designer to chat about your project, your vision and get expert guidance. If you guys have any questions about Floor and Decor Tolleson, products they carry that I love or fun little flooring tips, tricks and insights I learned while there, make sure you drop those in the comments section so I can share their infinite wisdom!

Great article! I can totally relate.
